In December 1967, at Fort Campbell, KY, the 101st Division's 3rd Brigade, which included both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 506th boarded planes which would take them to Bien Hoa, Vietnam, during "Operation Eagle Thrust," the world's largest and longest airlift directly into a combat zone.
The 3rd BN, 506th Currahees, who were in the 1st Brigade of the 101st Division, had been sent to Vietnam in October 1967. They were first flown from Fort Campbell to San Francisco, and then sailed to Vietnam on the SS Weigel.
