For black Clarksville veteran, pride took flight on silver wings

Among all of the symbols of the fight for civil rights that erupted in the wake of World War II, one of the most important - to a degree that is hard to fathom today - was a pair of silver wings.

Ask retired Command Sgt. Maj. Sidney Brown what it meant to him to pin on the jump wings of the U.S. Army Airborne soldier in the year 1950, and the look on his face tells you everything in a way that words cannot.
